We don't care enough to ask you for your email!

Why, why, WHY is everyone still obsessing over capturing email addresses?!?! I am sincerely perplexed by this on-going phenomenon of wasted energy.

Isn't the purpose of email marketing to capture and engage the end user with a call to action, resulting in them buying whatever product you're hocking? K, with that in mind ... why are people then using social media to capture email addresses? You ALREADY have their attention!?!

Think about it ... you add people to email lists, and then they're one of a few thousand that get added to a Mail Chimp or Constant Contact list ... and you may never hear from them again- VERSUS properly engaging them via social media welcoming them into your life and oh btw here is this product or service I am pushing, would love it if you can check it out.

Seriously peoples ... we've pretty much tuned out email marketing (with a few exceptions). If you're so focused on capturing the valuable email addresses, you're actually missing a potential sale which is sitting nice and pretty right in front of you. BAHHHHhhhhhh...  #JustSayin

I'll answer this from a musicians perspective. Social networking sites can come and go (see myspace), and you don't want to let people slip through the cracks just because they aren't on the site of the moment. E-mail addresses change less frequently than a social networking profile.

You are right about engaging people though - it shouldn't be used as a replacement for social media, or soley to push a product. It should be a supplement to your engagement process.

wow - so eloquently said. Yes, i agree social media channels may come and go - however if the engagement is done correctly, the fan base incurred moves with you. Case and point ... 2 fans from my liveshow 2 years ago on LiveVideo are now writers for this site.
