#Nerdsunite: Inside the Marketing Mind of @MyMelodie (12 Ways to Go Green at Work)

<editorsnote> Nerds, meet my buddy Melodie. I met her when she invited me to come and crash on her couch for the night in the San Dizzle and she is for reals one of the nicest chicas ever. She's a fellow marketer and wanted to use this space to share her thoughts on life, love, and all things nerd. Hit it Melodie! </editorsnote>

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @MyMelodie

Happy Earth Day Nerds! I love this time of year because it really makes use more aware of how we’re treating our home, the earth. There are many things I consider when running my marketing business Marketing Melodie. I’m proud to run a business that promotes environmental sustainability. I recycle, reduce, reuse and practice many greening efforts in all areas of my business. To celebrate Earth Day 2012, here are 12 ways to go green at work. Whether you're an entrepreneur, sole proprietor, work for a large corporation or own a small business or are just a cool nerd who wants to create a more environmentally sustainable earth, you can help create a greener workplace!

1. Bring your own waterbottle/mug- Many offices offer a water and coffee station. Along with the drink stations come plastic cups that are often used once and tossed. To reduce carbon footprint with your beverage consumption, bring your own reusable water bottle and coffee mug. Leave these in the office so you remember to use them.

2. Place plants on your desk and around the office- In addition livening up your space, plants help absorb indoor pollution. Some plants that are easy to maintain and do well in an indoor setting include: air plants, cactus, aloe, spider plants and jade.

3. Turn off electronics at night- Turn off your computer and other electronics at night and unplug the adapter. Even an idle adapter draws energy. If you work at a large company with hundreds of computers, think of how much energy this will save.

4. Encourage natural light- Design your work space to take advantage of natural light. Don't cover up large windows or face your desk in the opposite direction of natural light. This will eliminate your need to use a desk lamp during the day.

5. Reduce paper usage- The greenest paper is no paper at all, so keep things digital whenever possible. I previously let you nerds know about. It’s a great too that allows you to file things electronically. You can also save any documents from your computer you need to file as a PDF and file it directly on your computer. If you have to print something that's more than one page, make sure to print on both sides.

6. Electronic billing- Switch your billing statements from paper to electronic. Who likes to get bills in the mail anyway? Getting billing statements online is also more efficient since you get notified as soon as the bill is ready as opposed to having to wait for the post man to arrive.

7. Eco friendly business cards- Business cards are still very relevant in our digital age. You won't go to a networking event without having people ask you for your card. It's also a quick way to exchange information. There are various resources you can use to have an electronic business card such as uME. However, it's often still relevant to carry around a paper business card. In this case, there are many options for printing your business cards on recycled paper. Moo Cards allows you to choose their "Green" printing when creating your cards.

8. Make your recycling bins larger than your trashcans- In most offices, there are many large trashcans and a few smaller bins for recycling. This should be reversed. In reality, many of the items you're throwing away can be recycled but because the recycling bins are usually full, we end up throwing away recyclables out of convenience.

9.  Use motion detectors to control lighting - This is a great tip if you have a storage room, copy room and other rooms that are used but not occupied during the entire day.

10. Reuse paper- It's amazing how many sheets of paper are printed out for drafts then get thrown away as soon as the final document is printed out. Turn the piece of paper to it's other side (if it's not printed on both sides) cut it up into fourths an use it as scratch paper for notes, messages, etc. This is an eco friendly alternative for people who use a lot of post it notes.

11. Recycle electronics- Items such as old electronics, batteries and light bulbs are often thrown away in the trash due to the inconvenience and cost it takes to recycle. However, there are free electronics recycling events that happen across the nation. It takes a little research and planning to find the upcoming and closest event but it's really not too much of a hassle considering how hazardous throwing away electronics is. San Diego has free electronics recycling events through Recycle San Diego. Many Ikea stores accept old light bulbs.

12. Donate usable office items- Earth Day is also a great time to do some spring cleaning. What items are laying around in your office and desk that you no longer use?  Gather up all these items, ask your co workers to do the same and then donate them to your local charity. Reducing clutter creates a cleaner and clearer workspace which allows more fresh air to flow through your work space.

Alright nerds, these tips are simple! They just require small changes which make a big difference. Once again, Happy Earth Day and please share if you have additional tips on how to go green at work!

#NerdsUnite: Inside the marketing mind of @MyMelodie (Adventures in Exploring Chicago on Foursquare)

Hit it Melodie!</editorsnote>

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @MyMelodie

Hello Nerds! I’m so happy to be back and writing on this site! Once I get out of the habit of writing regularly, it’s hard to get back into it. I’m working up in LA this week and I finally had a chance to go to trivia with the Talk Nerdy To Me Lover Team! Catching up with @JenFriel@Leah_Cevoli and @ItsMeJoolie always inspires me to write more, so here I am!

When I first introduced myself as a nerd on this site last year, I mentioned how ecstatic I get when I unlock Foursquare badges! One of the reasons is because my marketing mind comes in to play and I notice how businesses are utilizing Foursquare to brand themselves; prompt user generated content and add a gaming element to their marketing. That and I just love the bragging rights that come along with the badges ;).

I recently had a chance to visit one of my favorite cities, Chicago and used Foursquare to explore the city! I’m sharing some of my adventures to inspire you to both check in more and visit Chicago! One of my best friends, Krissy moved back home to Chicago last year and has been nudging me to come and visit ever since. A few months back we decided St. Patrick's Day weekend would be the perfect time for me to adventure out to Chicago again. The timing worked out perfectly because I was already traveling to Austin for SXSW March 8-14th so instead of flying all the way back to San Diego, I flew to Chicago on March 15th and stayed for St. Patrick's Day weekend. As a bonus I brought the San Diego sunshine to Chicago with me! It was 70s and sunny my entire stay!

I love traveling and exploring new places but I don't like to have strict agendas or time tables to follow. I enjoy being able to relax and check out new places without feeling like I need to see everything. I generally travel with a few ideas in my head of places I'd like to check out but leave things completely open as I truly believe that things always work out exactly how they're supposed to. The Explore Chicago website does such a great job at showcasing so many different attractions in their city. They have something for everyone, no matter what type of entertainment you're in to.

What I found exciting about all the attractions they list is that the City of Chicago has Foursquare badges you can unlock by exploring! I took a look at the lists and there was such a great variety of attractions that I decided to use their Windy City Badge list and On Location Badge list as a guideline for touring the city since many of these spots were places I wanted to visit anyway!  Here’s a glimpse of my adventures in Chicago, I’m highlighting locations that helped me unlock these 2 shiny new badges in addition to other fun things I experienced.

On Friday during the day I met up with my cousin Genevieve who attends college at the Art Institute in Chicago. We walked around the gorgeous Garfield Park Conservatory. So many beautiful species of plants and so many unique plants I've never even heard of. We then took the train over and toured the University of Illinois at Chicago campus where we also visited the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum located on campus. So much history in this little house! I wouldn't have known about either of these spots if it wasn't for Foursquare!

I love attending sporting events so I couldn't leave Chicago without going to a Bulls game! The Bulls are #1 in the NBA so tickets to the game are hard to come by! I was lucky enough to get hooked up by Sports Illustrated and the Bulls PR with tickets to the game and I'm so grateful for that! We picked up our tickets right outside Will Call which was right next to the famous Michael Jordan Statue! Even though the Bulls are in first place they were missing their best player that night and lost to the Portland Trailblazers! It was still an exciting and close game though!

After the game we met up with friends at a popular tavern/restaurant called The Boundary. I was happy to see that many Chicago businesses are utilizing Foursquare specials to grow their business. I checked in at Boundary and noticed they had a pretty epic Foursquare special. "Show that you've checked in at The Boundary on Foursquare with parties of 3+ and receive a free Nachos plate." The Nachos plate was enormous! Definitely more than enough to feed everyone in our group.

The next day was St. Patrick's Day! Chicago takes their Irish heritage very seriously! They even dye their entire river GREEN!  We attended a roof top party in the beautiful sunshine with a gorgeous view of the city. Then headed to Wrigleyville where walked around Wrigley Field and all the bars in that area that were all jam packed with people dressed in GREEN!

The day after St. Patrick's day, the city calmed down. We began our day with a hearty brunch at Revolution Brewing Company. Only a couple miles from Krissy's house and highly recommended on the Windy City List. I loved the casual and fun atmosphere here! Then it was off to more exploring! We drove to the University of Chicago campus which has such a cool historic feel to it. We also visited the Oriental Institute Museum located on campus.  Before going back to our cars, we took a brisk walk past President Obama's House! It's on watch with the Secret Service!

Our next stop was the John Hancock tower. Their 95th Floor Signature Lounge is a great spot to grab a cocktail and watch the sunset! Before we knew it, it was dinner time! Within walking distance was Spiaggia, one of the finest Italian restaurants I've been watching to try. Their head chef is Sarah Gruenberg who was the Top Chef finalist in the most recent season and you guys know I’m addicted to that show! Their food is hands down some of the best Italian food I've enjoyed! Sarah was also so sweet and walked around talking to all her fans. If you're in to Italian food and fine dining you can't miss out on the experience of dining here! After dinner we called it a night. We had another long day planned the next day before my flight home at night.

After grabbing breakfast the next day, Krissy and I met up with my cousin Genevieve again at the Art Institute of Chicago Museum. It's the 3rd largest museum in the world! Visitors can easily spend hours in this museum and still not see every exhibit. I was excited to see the art featured in Ferris Bueller's Day Off especially since I recently watched the movie. If you haven't been to this museum, it's a MUST SEE in Chicago! After getting our culture vultures side satisfied at the museum, we walked down the road to the famous Cloud Gate Sculpture in Millennium Park that looks like a giant bean!

Before I conclude this post on my adventures in exploring Chicago, I must commend the city for doing such an amazing job at embracing social media to enhance their tourism experience. Adding a gaming element to Foursquare definitely helped me find many hidden gems that I wouldn't normally have known about. I'm so grateful I had this opportunity to explore Chicago and you can be sure I'll be returning very soon! Even though I packed a lot of adventure into my trip there is still so much for me to see and experience in Chicago! If you plan to go there, make sure you check out the Explore Chicago website before your visit!

#NerdsUnite: Inside the marketing mind of @MyMelodie (adventures in LA)

<editorsnote> Nerds, meet my buddy Melodie. I met her when she invited me to come and crash on her couch for the night in the San Dizzle and she is for reals one of the nicest chicas ever. #TalkNerdyToMeLover's @MyMelodie

A few weeks ago I had the honor of visiting the lovely @JenFriel, @Itsmejoolie and Talk Nerdy to Me Lover (TNTML) crew! They adventured down to San Diego a few months back and we had an amazing time talking nerdy in San Diego!

I’ve been meaning to make my way up to LA for a while so when Jen announced that she was launching her very first live show: Talk Nerdy To Me Lover- The Dirty Truth About Nerdy Girls, I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me to make the trip up.

I love how even though I don’t get to see my TNTML friends in real life (IRL) often we still keep up with each other’s lives and know what’s going on thanks to social media and the community we’ve built! When I arrived at Jen’s place, she was hoping in the shower so handed me the remote. I immediately switched to the Food Network. She came out and said “of course you’re watching Food Network”. An hour later, Julie comes home and sees Food Network on TV, same comment “Ha, you’re watching Food Network”. Yep they both know [I’m addicted to food porn http://www.talknerdytomelover.com/home/2011/11/30/nerdsunite-inside-the-marketing-mind-of-mymelodie-confession.html]  just from reading my post. Oh and I was so excited to see the LIME GREEN WALL! I’ve read all about the lime green wall at Jen and Julie’s but got to experience it in real life!

Other highlights of my Adventures in LA include: Dinner at Grub with @MegCorbs, @iamrachelwho, @HeatherBorges. The food was great! Comfort food with a fresh twist! They have these awesome homemade potato chocolate chip cookies we enjoyed for dessert too.  But better than the food was our conversations!

Dinner consisted of nerding out over Foursquare, Twitter, Social Media jobs and the Facebook page created by @iamrachelwho, Nothing Rhymes with Orange! We brainstormed some ideas on growing the community and taking it to the next level! But seriously if you haven’t seen this page, it’s one of my favorite humor pages.

After dinner we walked over to the Little Modern Theater to see Jen in her first live show! I’m so proud of her for making this happen. The show started with dramatic interpretations of OKCupid emails, then the dirty truth about nerdy girls! I can definitely can see this show taking off because it was such a great production that was real, raw, authentic and everything was created with passion!  Of course it was also interactive with a Twitter board for people to tweet questions during the show via the hashtag #nerdsunite.

I see Jen and Julie checking into Barney’s Beanery all the time, so told Jen that I definitely wanted her to take me there during my visit to see where all the magic happens. To my delight, she scheduled the after party there! A good time was had with everyone in the TNTML community!

Before leaving LA the next day I had an opportunity to take a yoga class with Julie! You guys all know that I’m extremely passionate about my yoga practice. Julie and I both nerd out over yoga all the time so we found a class time at her studio that worked out perfectly.

I had such a great time during my short visit to LA. Hanging out with everyone just made me appreciate social media so much more since it keeps me connected to everyone that I can’t see in person all the time. I’m definitely looking forward to more adventures in 2012. So much greatness has already happened this year with social media fueling my awesome experiences! This trip wouldn’t have been made possible if it wasn’t for this awesome community that Jen has built right here! Thanks Jen and thanks again for an opportunity to share on here!

#NerdsUnite: Inside the marketing mind of @MyMelodie (4 Reasons to Blog Even if No One is Reading)

Hit it Melodie!</editorsnote>

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @MyMelodie

First I’d like to thank everyone in the TNTML community who has reached out to me some way. I love hearing from you guys on Twitter and Facebook. I also appreciate the emails you guys send me. The majority of emails I have gotten are related to marketing questions. I love that you guys are interested and eager to learn more about marketing to improve your own business or brand so in today’s post I’d like to talk about one of the primary ways I market myself and that’s BLOGGING!

Although blogging is a great marketing tool, it’s not the reason I blog, it just happens to be an amazing benefit. I’ve been blogging for almost 10 years yet I don’t ever think of myself as a blogger. Blogging is really just me writing and since I now do it online, instead of saying “I write”, I say, “I blog”. In college I used to blog daily on Xanga.com. I wrote about my adventures, school, work and things I did and experienced day to day. Before blogging I used to journal. My parents had me journal as a kid to practice writing. I remember keeping a notebook and journaling as far back as kindergarten maybe even pre-school! (Even then I was an early adopter ;))

Now I write now to educate others, share my adventures and inspire both myself and my readers. I started my current website and blog, Marketing Melodie in March of 2008 (I can’t believe it’s been almost 4 years). When I started it, I was working for a large media company doing sales and marketing. I created the site to be a resource for clients and to educate myself. It’s since evolved into the marketing company I run today specializing in digital technology and social media.

Whether it’s for your business (especially if it’s for your business) or personal I highly recommend everyone have a blog. I hear the excuse from so many people “But no one is going to read my blog”. So what if no one reads what you write? Write for YOU, write like no one is reading and don’t be afraid to put your thoughts down in a tangible place. By doing this you’ll receive so many benefits. So I present you with 4 Reasons to Blog Even if No One is Reading.

  1. SEO- The first reason is just practical so let’s start with that. Even if a single soul doesn’t read your blog, updating your site with fresh, new content (this is especially important if it’s a business blog on your website) will significantly improve your SEO. Search engines pick up on fresh, new content and place a higher value on sites that have been recently updated versus stagnant sites that have been sitting around for months or years. Within each blog post you can create links with keywords directing readers to other areas of your site. I won’t get too technical here, but just know that blogging will improve your SEO.
  2. Blogging teaches you- I learn something new every day and much of it is attributed to writing. I find that writing stuff down often teaches me how to be more clear and concise with the thoughts I have racing through my mind. Because I’m able to clarify my thoughts I’m able to see things in a different perspective which in turn teaches me more about the very topic I’m blogging about.
  3. Blogging is cathartic- Sometimes you just need to get things off your chest. During these times, it can also difficult to say these things out loud. Well blogging is a great way to release any emotions you have stored up.  Not all blogs need to be public. If you write something but don’t yet feel ready to share it, there’s no shame in that. But at least you put it out into the world so it’s no longer just stored inside you. Putting things out there is also a great step in being able to let things go.
  4. Reflection- I read a bunch of blog posts I wrote back in 2008. Wow it’s really amazing to be able to read the YOU from 4 years ago. Reading old posts really allows me to reflect on things I’ve done in the past but also appreciate the present moment. It brings into perspective even more of how everything that’s happened so far has led me to where I am today. I do find it amusing though because reading back on some of the stuff I wrote the thought “Are you kidding me? I actually said that?!” does tend to pop up a lot. Live and learn. Live and learn.

As you can see, writing, blogging, whatever you want to call it has helped me in so many ways. I leave you with a quote from a famous writer that really inspired me:

“And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise.  The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt”.  ~Sylvia Plath

#NerdsUnite: Inside the marketing mind of @MyMelodie (Shit Social Media Experts Say)

Hit it Melodie!</editorsnote>

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @MyMelodie

When I shared my List of 12s for 2012  for things I want to accomplish related to tech/web/social media, YouTube was on the list and I said “I’m not a regular YouTuber but I’m currently working on an awesome Social Media related video that will be published soon. My goal is to get at least 1 million views on this video. I know that sounds extreme especially since my current YouTube videos have views only in the hundreds. I’ve got a good feeling about this video and in 2012 I’m going to get 1 million views on my social media related YouTube video.”

Well I’m making progress! I finished the video and it’s now up for your viewing pleasure! I couldn't help myself with this video. While watching the popular video "Shit Girls Say" and all the spin offs (By the way my favorite spin off is "Shit Yogis Say" since yoga is my other passion), I got a great idea to create a video related to my love for marketing, tech and social media!

Please, please, pretty please share this if you find it funny, compelling or can relate to it in any way.  Leave comments and spread the word! I'm aiming for at least 1 million views and since most people reading this are extremely tech savvy and influential in the space, we should have no problem achieving this goal!

And now for the feature presentation: "SHIT SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERTS SAY" (You know, the people who can run your Facebook and Twitter account)

Big thank you to @jennyjenjen for producing and editing the video, @iPodschun , @ChrisKirkman for being a part of creating the video and @LoMagna for her ideas on writing the script.
