#Nerd's Fashion Spotlight: #Olsenboye

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's Annika Buser

I’m sure that unless you’ve been living under a rock for most of your life, you’ll know who Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are. They were the “Hannah Montana” of the late 90’s and early 00’s. Starring in 16 films and 4 separate TV series, the girls have been acting for most of their lives. Since the release of New York Minute in 2004, however, the twins haven’t starred in any movies, and for years we didn’t hear too much about them. Now they have directed their energy into creating their very own fashion label, Olsenboye, which is a “Cities of the World” themed label, coming out with travel-inspired collections.

The brand new Fall 2010 collection is inspired by one of the world’s most amazing cities, and my personal favourite, London. They make a wide range of products, from shoes and accessories, to tops and dresses. After looking through the collection (sold exclusively at JCPenney’s), I have to say that some of the pieces are really cute, and definitely something I would wear. The first thing I looked through were the shoes, being something of a shoe-addict, and I found some really sweet little flats, like these black slip-on’s with an oh-so-cute little bow!

They are the perfect summer shoe, because they go with any outfit, and are light and airy, which is great in a hot climate. Another thing I found was that they have some really awesome accessories, like this gorgeous little “messenger bag”. It comes in 3 different colors, but I really love this red-black-and-white version. It’s the perfect accessory to really add something special to your look at anytime!

In case you are thinking this is a “Shoes and Accessories” brand, because that’s all I’ve been talking about, believe me, nothing could be further from the truth. They have a wide range of really stylish dresses, tops, pants and skirts, including this fun little black-and-white stripy stud pocket tee, which would go great with any high waisted skirt, or pants. I love outfits that are just black-and-white, so I would wear it with a high waisted black skirt, and some white flats, or even black flats, and perhaps a white accessory, like a bangle or a headband.

So be sure to keep an eye out for the Olsen twins in the near future, and an even closer eye on what they are wearing! And don’t forget to check out the Olsenboye collection at www.olsenboye.com, and enjoy some new London-inspired trends!

My adventure to meet Ken Block

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @maniacalmorgan

So, there I was. Sitting in my room with nothing to do. I thought to myself, "What a wonderful day to go meet professional rally car driver, Ken Block." So I did. Here's the video.

This was also my first time editing a video and posting it. Crazy camera angles and such. It's my artistic touch.

Also, don't forget about the Ken Block Twitter Campaign!

#NowPlaying: Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation

Nothing says I love life quite like some Rhythm Nation. Dude, this is still one of my all time favorite albums. HIT IT JANET!!!!!

With music by our side

To break the color lines

Let's work together

To improve our way of life

Join voices in protest

To social injustice

A generation full of courage

Come forth with me

Chorus:

People of the world today

Are we looking for a better way of life

We are a part of the rhythm nation

People of the world unite

Strength in numbers we can get it right

One time

We are a part of the rhythm nation

This is the test

No struggle no progress

Lend a hand to help

Your brother do his best

Things are getting worse

We have to make them better

It's time to give a damn

Let's work together come on

Repeat Chorus

Using Torrents and Proper Torrent Etiquette

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @maniacalmorgan

Torrents; what are they and what are the rules? I'm going to give you the low down on what they are and how to use them.

First of all, what are torrents? Torrents are files shared in a peer-to-peer network. Just to be clear, downloading files in this manner IS NOT ILLEGAL. The only thing that could make this illegal is to download copyrighted material. Now, torrents come in all shapes and sizes. They can be pictures, videos, music, movies, programs, pretty much anything and everything.

How do they work? First, you need a program to download torrent files which are in a ".torrent" file format. I personally use Vuze which allows me to stream my downloaded files from my computer to my Xbox 360 or PS3. This is great if you are downloading movies or music (legally of course). Other popular clients are uTorrent, Bitlord, and Bittorrent just to name a few.

So we have our client now. Woohoo! Step one is complete. Before we start talking about websites to find these ".torrent" files, there a few terms you should be familiar with. Seeds or seeders refers to the number of people that you can download from. You don't actually download the file as one big lump like you would a traditional download. It gets chopped up into segments which you download from different people all at the same time in random order. This would explain why you can't watch a movie or listen to a song until after you have finished downloading it. Leechers or peers are the amount of people who are also downloading said file. Keep in mind that the higher the ratio of seeds : leechers, the faster your download will go.

A couple of good websites to search for and download torrents from are The Pirate Bay and btjunkie. Feel free to do your own research to find sites that work for you. Once again, keep in mind that downloading copyrighted material is illegal. When finding a torrent to download, a rule of thumb is to always read the comments! There are a lot of shady people out there that will hide viruses in torrent files. Don't let this scare you away though. Read the comments to see what other people have said and this will let you know if it's a file you can trust. If you are downloading music or movies, people will always rate the sound and/or picture quality. Torrent websites will almost always list the contents of the torrent before you download it. Just be on the lookout for ".exe" files or other executables which could very well be a virus.

Once you start downloading a torrent file, you are also seeding. You seed any part of the file that you've downloaded. Depending on your internet speed, you'll want to limit your upload speed to keep your internet from slowing way down. Some torrent sites require a certain upload ratio.  Keep this in mind if you find a really good site that you want to continue to use. Some sites require a 0.5 ratio which means, for every 1GB you download, you must upload 500MB. Even if not required, I will seed a file for a day or two, not because I have to, but just out of courtesy. Do unto others...

After all is said and done, why should you download torrents? Well, it's a quick and easy way to download large files from other people. You can download whole CDs, book series, whole seasons of your favorite TV shows... anything and everything. It's quick and it's easy. Now, go out there and enjoy!
