#AppIdea: Facial recognition technology + Facebook = one happy camper
Argh! I've been tweeting in extreme frustration about this for YEARS now, and I finally just want to flush the idea out and either a) see if it is already on the market or b) see if one of you loverly nerderinos will go and make it.
So, I travel a lot and meet a lot of people. I VERY rarely will ever forget a face, but a name? No way. By the time its left your mouth chances are REALLY good that I've already forgotten it.
The lack of memory absorption INSTANTLY creates an awkward dynamic. People always seem to remember me from some crazy adventure, so it's even worse when THEY approach to say hey and I'm forced into an blank stare submission. I've learned to adapt quickly and since I call everyone "dude" anyway, I can pacify it for a moment while my brain attempts to connect ... but this is bullshit, man. It's 2013!!!!!! With google allowing access to the world's library and my iPhone keeping contacts backed up on the cloud, I don't need to remember anything anymore; all we need to know now at this stage in the game is HOW to access the information, not retention of said information.
With everyone now having digital identities via social media, why isn't there an app yet that allows you to take a photo of someone, and then have it connect to Facebook where it can scan your friends, or even the entire index and tell you who that person is. Obvi, I'm sure there are a lot of privacy issues around this, so there may be an "opt out" option, or a sign saying "facial recognition technology in use" ... but DUDE that would make life SO much easier.
<tangent> I was watching some documentary on Vegas casinos and it was describing how they identify literally EVERYONE that comes in within a matter of seconds. They didn't go into how it scans, (although I believe it was through the DMV) and they use it mostly to kick out criminals or other people that have been banned for one reason or another. How is that legal? I see no signs posted discussing their degree of technological snooping.
Funny story though, when I was in Vegas for CES a few years back, I was rocking my leopard spirithood and within ... 30 seconds? less? I got stopped by a security guard who came OUT OF NO WHERE letting me know that the hat wasn't allowed to be worn inside the casino. He then had to check my ID and I had to wait for a few minutes while I was "cleared." Totally nuts. </tangent>
I know the facial technology is already there.
How else do you think Facebook notifies you of the suggested tags with the pre-populated friend it thinks it is?
If the app is already out there, if you could please let me know I'd appreciate it. I'm staring at this dude right now at Cafe Primmo and I KNOW I know him ... so embarrassing.
Oh yeah, and if someone can do this too that'd be great. K bye ...
