How you know #AOL has officially become irrelevant ...

When my 80 something year old great-great aunt Jean likes them on Facebook.

HAHAHAHA Solitaire, Mahjongg, and AOL.

Dude, when I was up for the Lifestreaming gig - they asked me what I would change about AOL. I said, well, I would admit you were irrelevant. They said, whhhhaaaa? I said yeah! Own the fact that you guys are so uncool right now, and make it cool again.

Needless to say ... I did not get the gig.

#DOH!

PS. Not mad at the video I made for it. DUDDEEEE!!! A Silent Film makes my LIFE!

P.P.S. Good job aunt Jean! I'm still totally not gonna friend you though.

@PeteCashmore responds to #TechCrunch deal

Petey Pete Pete has a blog outside of Mashable. Is it too nerdy that I knew that ... cause I did ... and either way, it's pretty bitchin.

Check out Pete's thoughts on AOL's acquisition of TechCrunch:

Swinging for the Fences

TechCrunch getting acquired by AOL is pretty interesting to me.  I mailed the team earlier today to congratulate them on their accomplishment, but I thought I’d blog a few thoughts too.

I’m excited about the deal.  It’s a huge validation for our industry that cements my convictions: Blogging creates real value.  It makes an impact on people’s lives.  I’m glad AOL understands and rewards that value creation.

But I’m excited in general right now.

Mashable is on a tear.  We just opened a new HQ in NYC — suddenly we have an entire floor to ourselves.  That’s in addition to our SF office and team members across the US and Europe.  There’s more than 30 of us, and growing.

At 9.7 million uniques/month, we’re the leader in our space.

Yet the office itself is half-empty.  We have a lot of desks to fill.  Fortunately we have a stream of talented journalism grads and media veterans stepping forward to join the charge.

That’s how I feel about the market, too.  Lots of empty seats.  Limitless untapped potential.  We’re large by the standards of a blog.  But by mainstream media standards?  Tiny.  It’s a gap we plan to close — and do so under our own steam.

Who’s left to swing for the fences?  Who’s going to achieve the escape velocity required to reach beyond our insular technology community and build a truly mainstream publication?

We’re not tired in the slightest.  We have the youthful naivety to believe we can go mainstream — and the stamina to achieve it.

I love, love, love, it. I was curious to read this. I wasn't sure what the folks over at Mashable thought about the deal. Like I said in an earlier post, I don't even put Mashable and Techcrunch in the same field. To me, they appease different desires for my tech knowledge. Mashable is definitely still my default, as I trust their information regarding social media more ... and I don't know, its just loyalty I guess. Honestly, no BS aside, it really didn't occur to me that Mashable would even need to respond to this. Even if it was just Pete, and Unmashed as he likes to call it ... Mehhhhhhh! Congrats TechCrunch, and yes I agree with Pete, this bodes well for the industry as a hole. Keep it up!!!

#AOL acquires @TechCrunch

Well, that didn't take long ... less than 24 hours after a few hush hushness started brewing online, AOL's CEO Tim Armstrong has announced on TechCrunch, that they have acquired TechCrunch.

Meh, I don't know about you guys ... but I'm much, much, much more of a Mashable kinda chickie. Don't get me wrong, I still read it everyday, but some of their articles can just be blahhhh. I don't know, I feel like Mashable is a lot more objective and has a lot more substance to their posts. Michael Arrington kinda gives me the heeby jeebs, while Pete Cashmore is just the kitten's ball of yarn. #MEOW!!! But who am I kidding ... alrite, read this piece of delicousness:

I’m very pleased to announce that we have acquired TechCrunch. Details are in the press release below, and I’m sure founder Michael Arrington will have a few words to say as well. This is a great complement to our continued investment in world class content.

AOL TO ACQUIRE TECHCRUNCH NETWORK OF SITES

Leading Authority on Tech News Will Expand AOL’s Growing Offering of World-Class, Audience-Relevant Content

San Francisco, CA, September 28, 2010 – AOL Inc. [NYSE: AOL] today announced that it has agreed to acquire TechCrunch, Inc., the company that owns and operates TechCrunch and its network of websites dedicated to technology news, information and analysis. TechCrunch and its associated properties and conferences will join the AOL Technology Network while retaining their editorial independence, further bolstering AOL’s position as one of the world’s leading providers of high-quality, tech-oriented content. The announcement will be made on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, CA.

Founded by Michael Arrington, TechCrunch operates a global network of dedicated properties from Europe to Japan, as well as vertically-oriented websites, including MobileCrunch, CrunchGear, TechCrunchIT, GreenTech, TechCrunchTV and CrunchBase. The TechMeme Leaderboard ranks TechCrunch as the No. 1 source of breaking tech news online, followed by AOL’s Engadget.*

“Michael and his colleagues have made the TechCrunch network a byword for breaking tech news and insight into the innovative world of start-ups, and their reputation for top-class journalism precisely matches AOL’s commitment to delivering the expert content critical to this audience,” said Tim Armstrong, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AOL. “TechCrunch and its team will be an outstanding addition to the high-quality content on the AOL Technology Network, which is now a must-buy for advertisers seeking to associate their brands with leading technology content and its audience.”

Heather Harde, Chief Executive Officer of TechCrunch, said: “TechCrunch and AOL share a motivating passion for quality technology news and information, and we’re delighted about becoming part of the AOL family. This represents a compelling opportunity to extend the TechCrunch brand while complementing the great work of sites like Engadget and Switched. Our contributors, and our audiences, can look to the future with excitement about what we can build when we have the significant resources of AOL behind us.”

Michael Arrington, Founder and Co-Editor of TechCrunch, said: “Tim Armstrong and his team have an exciting vision for the future of AOL as a global leader in creating and delivering world-class content to consumers, be it through original content creation, partnerships or acquisitions. I look forward to working with everyone at AOL as we build on our reputation for independent tech journalism and continue to set the agenda for insight, reviews and collaborative discussion about the future of the technology industry.”

TechCrunch also hosts industry-leading conferences and events, including The Disrupt series, The Crunchies Awards and various meet-ups worldwide. These conferences bring together industry innovators, entrepreneurs and financing sources to exchange ideas, forge new relationships and discuss the current and future industry trends.

“Engagement with thought leaders is as important to AOL as our engagement with our contributors, audiences, publishers and advertisers, and TechCrunch’s conferences and websites will give us a promising, additional springboard to join and amplify these conversations. We’re committed to quality in everything we do at AOL, and look forward to working with Heather, Michael and the TechCrunch team to extend the brand,” said David Eun, President of AOL Media and Studios.

The AOL Technology Network consists of AOL’s tech-oriented properties including Engadget, the Web magazine about everything new in gadgets and consumer electronics; Switched, which covers the intersection of the digital world with entertainment, sports, art, fashion and lifestyle; TUAW, the unofficial Apple weblog; and DownloadSquad, the weblog about downloadable software and other computer subjects. The AOL Technology Network ranks in the top five for tech news according to comScore Media Metrix, August 2010 data, and leads the top five in average time spent and average visits per user.

This acquisition will further AOL’s strategy to become the global leader in sourcing, creating, producing and delivering high-quality, trusted, original content to consumers. TechCrunch will remain headquartered in San Francisco, CA, as a wholly owned AOL unit. Deal terms were not disclosed.

#Randombling: That Nerdy Chick

Randombling: A 5 minute long unedited random stream of consciousness produced by a nerd for nerds.

#nowplaying: Love the way you lie, Eminem ft. Rihanna

Great, great, great day nerds. Like really great day ... like such a great day, I did my screen test today on 2 hours of sleep, and STILL could not nap this afternoon because I was so excited. See, this is me ... I am excited ----->

I knew the last few weeks were going to be nutso, but I just had no idea what the real definition of nutso was. The awesomeness just doesn't stop - to say I am floored would be the greatest understatement of the century.

When we're kids, we are told find what makes you happy in life. My problem was being a lifecaster wasn't something I could explore with my guidance counselor. I am really, really, really, really, really, really, good at what I do. Just so rad to see that so many people are interested in it, and are catching on. I see the analytics, and I can pull the reports on the trends - dude, I eat sleep and breathe in this social space - but yeah ... totally fucking rad.

Had a great time meeting Serj tonight. I was reminded of Almost Famous tho - I never felt more like a "writer" in my entire life. I felt a little weird, I'm not going to lie. I kinda just wanted to shoot the shit with the dude, and unfortunately at an event like tonight ... it just was not going to happen. It was press vs. artist. That's never my deal. But thx again to @platinumevent for the love - and it was so great meeting @seven16. He saw my checkin, and totally stopped by to hang out. UBERLY rad!!!!

Love, love, love, me some life. OHHH!! And I talked to my lawyer today, and just found out the paperwork we need for the film just got a LOT easier. That makes me happy ... having to chase nerds around saying, oh oh oh!! sign this ... is a bigger pain than a bullet in a donkey's ass. Not that I've ever seen that, but it just sounded kinda cool.

Good stuff nerds, I kinda need to be pinched - not gonna lie, shit got very real today. A lot of people are talking nerdy to their lovers, and I couldn't be prouder. Thx a heap, nerds!!! =) Off to bed.
