#NerdsUnite: I can haz funny (one nerd's journey around the comedic circuit)

<editorsnote> Nerds, meet my buddy Brandon. We started talking on the Facebook not too long ago, and lemme tell you, this guy can throw in quite the few kneeslappers in his emails. Yep, see Brandon is a comedian who is here today to tell you the real deal on what it's like being "on the circuit." I only have one more thing left to say ... HIT IT BRANDON!!! </editorsnote>

There are about 10 million comedy specials out, some of them phenomenal, most of them passable. Here are my favorite 5 (in no order).

Dane Cook, Vicious Circle: Say what you want about Dane, I know I have, but Vicious is an insanely good special. Yes it is done in the typical Dane over the top loud style, but the fact the he retains command of such an enormous crowd makes this a special to watch. Playing shows in the round is hard (I hear), at all times your back is to half of the crowd, but Dane manages to not only make it work, but to KILL in this situation.

See also: ISolated INcident: Dane in awesome form, doing a quieter set. Still has the same Dane mannerisms, but it is a more traditional stand up set, and it is insanely personal.

Eddie Murphy, Raw: Eddie dominated comedy in the 1980’s. So much so that after 25 years of not performing people still beg to see him take the stage. This is a fun special to watch. Eddie is young and confident, but remains in total control the entire time he is on stage. I especially like how he floats seamlessly from raunchy stand up, to fun character pieces. I especially love showing this special to people who have never seen Eddie do comedy, because there’s almost no way to predict how raunchy it gets. There is a cringeworthy bit about homosexuality, that doesn’t hold up in 2012, but the moment passes and hilarity follows, keep in mind the guy on stage yelling faggot is wearing purple leather.

See Also: Delirious. Eddie’s first special, also really good, I just feel like the Raw material was more refined.

Bill Cosby, Himself: Bill Cosby is a great story teller. And in this special he flows magically from one tale to another. Bill Cosby makes comedy look effortless. He controls the crowd in a way that tricks the viewer into thinking “I could do this” Bur therein lies the trap. There is only one Bill Cosby, and this is him at his best.

Bill Burr, Why Do I Do This?: I love the angry white comic. It is just a really interesting persona to watch, and Bill Burr is the best at it. His rants on race, women, sports,  whatever. Burr is just scathing in his critiques and more often than not you’ll think “Man that’s kind of fucked up,” followed immediately by “But he isn’t wrong.” Burr might be the least famous on this list, but that’s only because America has some hang up about comics that are super honest speaking freely.

See also: Patrice O’Neal Elephant in the room for all of the reasons mentioned above. I actually like it more, but I didn’t want the list to be a bunch of black dudes. I don’t know why.

The Kings of Comedy: Say what you want about the material, but this is the most FUN comedy special I’ve ever seen. Sure it isn’t always the most original material, but look at the audience. From start to go the audience isn’t just laughing, they are actively having FUN. I defy you to find a comedy show where the audience enjoys themselves as much as they do here.

I was going to write about how awesome doing comedy is, and how often it seems that someone will offer me either drugs or sex after a show, but that can be summed up thusly: Sometimes after shows, a member of the audience will offer me sex, drugs, or both. I usually accept.

Now that that’s out of the way. I’m still in Kansas City! And I love it, the Chicago dream is being pushed back for now, but I’m making the best of my time here in KC. Also I’m in a contest! The funniest comic in KC, or some such nonsense. I generally hate comedy contests, (Sometimes I do okay in them) but due to me not really knowing anyone in KC, aside from a few comics, this one doesn’t seem so bad. I don’t feel like I’m competing against a bunch of my friends (since most of my KC comic friends are ineligible from this contest) and I think that’s why I’m more excited about this contest than I am about most. So, there’s that. If you’re in the KC area the next few Tuesdays, go to Stanford’s and tell them you’re there to see me. Then laugh, because I’m fucking hilarious.

Here are some weird bits and pieces of things that are going on in my life: I’m addicted to the Hash Brown casserole at Cracker Barrel. And alcohol. My dad wants me to graduate college soon, so I guess I’ll just go and do that. Other stuff: I used to play trumpet, and since I’ve been stuck in my parents’ house, I’ve picked that up again. It’s not great, but it’s happening. And I dig it, I think I’m recording a dubstep jazz album soon, so buy/download that. I’m out of things to say, but feel free to tweet me. I like tweeting.

Next week I will write something awesome.

The rules of open mic comedy:

  • You will kill every time no one is watching
  • You are your worst critic, until you do decent, at which point everything you think is overinflated and wrong.
  • YOU WILL BOMB EVERY TIME THAT YOU…
    • Decide comedy is going to be profitable
    • Invite a girl you plan on sleeping with to see you
    • Invite a friend to see you after telling them how good you have gotten
    • Ask the owner to watch your set
    • Ask a headliner to watch your set
  • Plaid pattern and a beard are now your new friends
  • Your friends now expect you to always be “on”
    • You won’t
  • Someone less funny than you will inevitably give you ADVICE
    • OF COURSE THE ADVICE WILL BE SHITTY
  • A comic you respect will tell you that you did a good job or are improving (out of kindness or a lost bet more than likely). You will take this to mean that you are the best comedian to ever perform and that next week you should headline. DO NOT HEADLINE
  • Make sure to film and post every set you ever do on youtube, when it sits at 14 views for 7 months you can remember how far from the top you really are.
  • That new killer joke you wrote sounds a lot like another joke by another comedian, congrats people now think you steal material
  • You will do the shittiest shows every chance you get because you love comedy and although it isn’t the most financially viable plan you’ve ever had it is the one thing you are passionate about and if you work real hard at it for a really long time, you might get to MC but odds are the booker will need to see another set…
