#NerdsUnite: I just graduated college!! But um, now what? (Why All the Fancy?)

<editorsnote> Nerds, meet my buddy Megan. She recently just graduated from SDSU and is now entering the world with a fresh pair of eyes in a stinky economy. In these series of posts she will discuss her thoughts and discoveries as she ventures out into the real world. Hit it Meg!!! </editorsnote>

Growing up there was a room in our house that was off-limits. The room that was strictly ‘for guests’ but never was really used for that either. I know that most families had a room or special china, etc that was to be looked at but not touched.

I didn’t realize how much the whole thing bugged me until my niece Claire was born. She was the first grandchild so of course she could do no wrong. She very routinely plays and destroys the nice ‘look but don’t touch’ room. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not jealous of my 4 year old niece, but it made me think why we had this room to being with.

It’s not just rooms but we all have the something that we are saving for special occasions/people. I have certain outfits, shoes, purses, etc.

And you know what I say to all of the above? EFF THAT!

Why do we save things that are special to us for other people? Life and everything in it is meant to be enjoyed.

These things are just that…things. We should enjoy ‘em while we have them. Plus these things obviously make us happy and feel special so why save them for OTHER people.

So my challenge to you is to wear that dress that’s been sitting in your closet when you do chores around the house, make a blanket fort in your ‘look but don’t touch room,’ and just ENJOY LIFE.

Trust me, the memories are better than the preservation of nice things.

#NerdsUnite: I just graduated college!! But um, now what? (Nerding Out Over @Nerdist))

It’s no surprise to anyone who knows me (online and off) that I’m obsessed with everything Nerdist. You can read a little bit of that obsession over on my personal blog here and here and here.

So when the amazing @JennHoffman told me about the Nerdist Christmas Eve special for BBC America that was taping on Sunday mere minutes after it was announced, you know I was all HELLLS YES!

I emailed the main Nerdist account to see if we could get an interview with the man behind it all, Chris Hardwick for girlsIRL as well as this lovely site. Unfourtunately he was swamped but he got me in contact with the producer of the show to ensure we got tickets. Uh ya, he’s pretty awesome.

Sunday rolls around and I feel like a kid on Christmas. I met Jenn in a waiting room before the show and mid-conversation we got interrupted by a BBC America camera crew wanting to get behind the scenes interviews.

They asked me why I was there and what makes me a nerd. Super fun to do and while I was interviewing the surprise guest (like I said…no spoilers!) accidentally walked into the room and was right behind me. The nerds went nuts haha. I also gave a HUGE shoutout to TNTML and the camera dudes LOVED the name. They asked me about it TWICE!

After Jenn finished up her interview it was time to go into the studio and we ended up front row! Woot.

The second Chris walked out I nerded out quite a bit. Next came Matt and Jonah (the other voices on the Nerdist Podcast) and then mother effin WIL WHEATON and NATHON FILLION.

I think my nerd brain was going to explode. I’m obsessed with what Wil has done for the nerd community and also everything FireFly/Serenity so having the two of them mere feet away was insane!

The show was absolutely amazing. Everyone was hysterical and not to mention so freaking sweet between shots. It was a teeny tiny room so people would shout out questions when they weren’t filming and the guys would happily answer them.

Part of the reason why I love the podcast so much is because it feels like you are just hanging out with your friends and they brought that same EXACT feeling to the taping.

When the taping was done Chris gave me one of the cards they had on set (as pictured above) and emailed me about setting up an interview with him later in the month!

That’s it..I can die happy AND cross something off my life list!

Make sure you tune in on Christmas Eve on BBC America after Doctor Who because you just may see some shots of me and Jenn…oh and because it is amazing! haha

This is so hard to admit, to myself, let alone to the whole TNTML community but sometimes it feels so good to just let it all out. To let the monsters out of my head even for just a moment.

I've been feeling so incredibly vulnerable and down lately. 99% of the time in a very positive and happy person. If I had a dollar for every time someone said "you smile ALL the time" I'd be a rich, rich person. That being said, let me explain where my head is currently at.

I've been unemployed for a few months now. While I do have an amazing job waiting for me in January it's been hard for me.

I have been working since I was 14 and extremely proud of that fact. Plus it helps my ADD mind to have something to keep me busy.

I'm one of those weirdoes that actually loves working and accomplishing things on a daily basis. There is nothing better than coming home after a long successful day at work.

I haven't had that for quite some time now. While I'm happy I am out of my last job, it still doesn't make the whole unemployment thing any easier.

I don't like feeling that I don't have any worth. To see my bank account shrink instead of increase. To not have stories to share at the end of the day.

Last weekend my sister had her reception for her wedding. All the family and family friends that were there were asking what I had been up to. Not going to lie, it was definitely a hit to my ego to say "I'm in-between jobs until Jan."

I know that what I have in front of me is incredible and something to be excited for. It's just so hard to make my ego take a back seat for a few months.

I need to realize that it's ok to be down once in awhile. It's because of these down times that the good times feel that much better.  I do have a lot to look forward to and my life is only about to get crazy exciting so if I'm bored or feel worthless for a few more months, that's ok.

I am going to be ok.
