Movie Review: #TheSwitch

DUDES!!!! I just got back from seeing The Switch, and omg omg omg ... I really liked it!

*cue 4sq checkin*

Synopsis: An unmarried 40-year-old woman turns to a turkey baster in order to become pregnant. Seven years later, she reunites with her best friend, who has been living with a secret: he replaced her preferred sperm sample with his own.

Yeah ... sounds like fun, doesn't it? I honestly went because I had a free ticket, and wanted to unplug from the interwebz for 2 hours ... I was shocked at how much I liked it.

It was marketed towards being this weird romantic comedy with Jennifer Aniston commanding her normally naggy lead, and it was the EXACT opposite; Jason Bateman commanded the screen and boy oh boy was he good!!!

I'm never one to want to give things away, but I can say this ... it was a realist's romantic comedy. Remove the Lifetime, Hallmark channel components, add in a neurotic hypochondriac and a kid that absolutely stole the show ... and oohhhhh loorrddyyyy you have a seriously unapologetically awesome flick. From the cinematography, to the music supervision the execution and general composition of the film was shockingly good - and yes, I hate to admit it ... that a nerdy little tear even escaped my eye at one poignant part.

It was touching without being molesty, sweet without being overly saturated, and fresher than Will Smith circa 1990.

Kudos, Jason Bateman ... KUDOS!!!!

The Switch opens in theaters this Friday!

PS. Juliette Lewis and Jennifer Aniston both totally made whoopie to Brad Pitt, was it a coincidence that the alleged sperm donor's bro bro looked EXACTLY like Senor Pitt? #JustSayin

#TNTML's Brandon Werner Guest Hosts #Wired's Web Marketing Podcast "The Hopkinson Report"

#TalkNerdytoMeLover's Brandon Werner

Last month, I posted on TNTML and MDP my thoughts on how Social Media is our Rock and Roll. Because of this post, I was invited to guest host Wired Magazine's Web Marketing Podcast, The Hopkinson Report!

The Hopkinson Report is hosted by Wired's Marketing Guy Jim Hopkinson and covers how web and technology are changing the way things are promoted online. In other words, the kind of thing I know you guys love. What really makes the show is Jim's unique take and delivery, which was once called "audio caffeine".

As a long time listener and sometimes behind the scenes guy (I designed the website), I was honored to get behind the mic. I previously was interviewed on the show on my generation research on Episode 102, Generation Wired, but this time it was all me.

I delve further into my idea that Social Media is the new Rock and Roll in this episode. No matter what the New York Times says about us twenty-somethings, we are completely changing the way business is done right now and its pretty darn exciting.

The Newest #XMen Cast Member: #MadMen's January Jones

#TalkNerdytoMeLover's Adam Reisinger

So the news came out today that January Jones (of "Mad Men" fame) has been cast as Emma Frost/The White Queen in the new X-Men prequel, "X-Men: First Class".

First, let's address the obvious physical, umm, "deficiencies", I guess, of Jones-as-Frost. Just look at the picture above. That's Emma Frost (as sculpted by Sideshow, based on art from Adam Hughes) on the right, and Jones on the left (as if you couldn't tell the human from the fictional character). Sure, Jones has the right skin tone and hair for Frost, but her shape is severely lacking.

Reportedly the much more curvaceous Alice Eve was in the running for the role. At first, I thought that possibly the producers of the movie chose to go with Jones because of her height, but Jones is listed at 5-foot-6, while Eve is 5'5 ½", so that couldn't be the reason (though honestly before looking it up, I would have pegged Jones at about 5'8" and Eve at 5'4", so their listed heights may not be accurate).

Look at a side-by-side comparison of Alice Eve with Emma Frost, this time in drawn form, rather than sculpture (though I've got more Emma Frost statue photos I could post):

Visually, that seems much more compatible. It helps that the outfit Eve is wearing in that shot from "She's Out of My League" could easily translate to a classroom setting, but I think if there is an actress in Hollywood that could pull off the body of Emma Frost, it's her. The acting required for the character, well, that's a different story?

However, I'm still not sold that Jones is the right choice either. Yes, Betty Francis (neé Draper) is pretty much an ice queen bitch, but Frost actually has an aloof, sardonic quality to her as well, which I don't get from Jones on "Mad Men" at all. She generally just comes off as wooden, at least for the past couple of seasons, which may not be entirely Jones's fault, but she can't be blameless either. I don't doubt that at times Jones has been a very good actress, but I just have this feeling that she's the wrong choice for this role -- much in the way that Halle Berry, while a good actress at times, was the wrong choice for both Storm and Catwoman.

I will say that the casting of Jones is the first time in awhile I've even cared about this movie, so that has to count for something. But for now, count me among the skeptical.
