A #Nerd Rant! The Secret Of NIMH

#TalkNerdyToMeLover’s Aaron Fitzgerald

Don Bluth’s, “The Secret Of NIMH”, is by far my favorite animated film of all time.  Bluth and his team of artists began production on this amazing movie in Bluth’s garage while they were still working at Disney.  The renegades weren’t happy with Disney’s productions at the time, wishing to produce traditional rated G films for families as Walt had done.  United Artists picked up the movie and it was released with very limited advertising.  The critics raved about it but it did less than modest at the box office.

My first memory of it was to watch it on HBO at three o’clock in the morning when I was fourteen.  I must say I was blown away by the visuals.  The background art is just incredible.  The animation is fluid and rivals all of Disney’s masterpieces.  I watched it over and over.  The sequence with the Great Owl is just downright gorgeous.  I particularly love the scene where Mrs. Brisby is flying on Jeremy’s back.  It may be a little overdone but it’s excellent nonetheless.  And I must not forget Mrs. Brisby’s journey into the rose bush.

Loosely based on the book, “Mrs. Frisby And The Rat’s Of NIMH”, the story revolves around a young widowed mouse, Mrs. Brisby, who’s son Timothy is sick with  pneumonia and can’t be moved whereby they are threatened by the farmer digging up the farm with the plow.  Mrs. Brisby is instructed by the Great Owl to seek the help of a society of intelligent rats that live in the rose bush by the farmhouse who can use their technology to move her house to the lee of the stone thereby protecting her family.  Once introduced to the rats she discovers a frightening secret about them which leads to a thrilling conclusion of a battle between good and evil.

Although the film didn’t garner a ton of box office sales it quickly became a classic favorite to a lot of people and led to Bluth’s company getting a deal with Steven Spielberg to produce their second feature, “An American Tail”, which did fair well with ticket sales.  Although the second venture is a bit lighter and more family friendly I still think, “The Secret Of NIMH”, is their masterpiece.  Love you, Don!

#Nerdgasm: Vampires suck

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @UlaVovk

So I just saw Vampires suck (I know, took me a while, it always does) and I loved it so I gotta share this with you. I can't remember the last time I laughed that hard. I love me some comedy and this just kicked my expectations' ass. Peed my pants, I swear

I knew it was a Twilight parody but I never imagined it would be such a big deal. YouTube is full of parody videos so I thought this was just more expanded version or the collection of all of them. But I was so wrong. It's the most kick-ass movie since... well, Kick-ass. (OK, not necessarily.)

If you read the Twilight saga (as I did... Oh, the month I'll never get back! *suicidal moment*) you know what's it about. Maybe you saw the movies? No? Well, the buzz around it is so big I bet you know what the deal with it is anyway.

The movie combines all three Twilight movies made so far and highlights crucial (ha ha) moments of the Twilight saga. It has those Scary Movie tendencies like super huge exaggeration with stuff but that's what makes it so awesome

And the cast is just amazing. Jenn Proske, who plays Becca, is simply awesome. She's better Bella than Kristen herself. Her "I smell something bad" face is dead-on. I guess she had the 'manual'.

Matt Latner is a true portrait of Edward (Sullen) ... inside-out. 'RPattz' (how sad is that?) made Edward look like a puss but Matt took it to the whole new level and revealed his true colors. Priceless.

And let's not forget Chris Riggi as Jacob... White. He... well, you'll have to see for yourself. Here's just a little preview:

We also get to see Diedrich Bader and Ken Jeong so great movie is guaranteed. So if you haven't seen it already, hurry up!

#Marriage: Now or Never?

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @maniacalmorgan

So, I might catch some flack for posting this article, but I have to get this off my chest. One of my closest friends who I've known longer than any of my other friends is thinking about proposing to his girlfriend. DON'T DO IT!

Ok, so I've known this friend for a looooong long long time. He was one of my first friends in 5th grade. I was 9 years old. I've known this guy for almost 15 years. For someone my age, that's a long ass time, right? I love this guy to death, he's my brother from another mother, but I caught wind that he wants to ask his girl to marry him. Now, I'm all for being happy and supporting my friends in what they want to do, but you have to have some background story.

My friend is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Seriously. He's always been there for me and all of his friends, whether it was convenient or not. I love this guy like a brother. He's always been so focused on his friends that he's been somewhat socially awkward with the ladies. Now, I'm not hating. I've always been there for him. I remember when we were 18, we were sitting on the beach with another friend; just three of us dudes. Now, we saw a couple of hotties camping out not far from us. Both friends being who they were made me go initiate conversation with these girls and invite them over. He's always been somewhat shy and hasn't ever really found the right girl to be in a serious relationship with until now. This is his first serious relationship in... forever.

I do have to say that his girlfriend is great from what I could tell. Not all of our friends would agree, but I liked her. She's a sweet and seemingly genuine person, but I think he needs to wait. He moved about 3 hours away from all of his friends, and the only person he knew in the town was his brother who was going to school. Naturally, the first girl he met, he's clung on to. I get it, but I think he should too. They have had their fair share of arguments and problems and I always get the "Hey Morgan, what should I do?" phone calls. Give it a few years. You're young, and she's even younger. She's 22 years old. I'm a different person than I was 6 months ago, let alone 2 years ago. Things and people change. If you want to be with someone, be with them, but don't be so eager to slap a ring and make it permanent.

I think it's always important to keep in mind what your friends think. I have yet to have a successful relationship where my friends didn't approve of the girl I was dating. I realize that it's no coincidence. Your friends know you better than anyone and aren't afraid to speak their minds to keep you from a lifetime of regret. That's what friends are for... to make you better, not bring you down. Trust them.

Just to clarify for all my nerds out there, I am not opposed to being married. I am totally a hopeless romantic and I get it. I really do, but I'm not ready now. I'm still working on making myself better before I could commit to anyone else. An analogy Jen used was life is like an airplane. You have to secure your oxygen mask before you can help anyone else with theirs. I know that people at my age are still fickle and very much exploring themselves. Like I said before, if you are going to be with someone, be with them, but don't be so eager to claim it forever. If they love you, they won't be going anywhere.

So, to my friend that may or not be reading this. I love you, man. You are my brother and my friend. Know that I care and want you to be happy, but I don't want you to lead yourself down a path of unhappiness. Just wait and be happy with what you have for now.

What do you guys feel about the situation? Feel free to follow me on Twitter or friend me on Facebook!

#Randombling: In the mind of @LikesGoyBoys

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @LikesGoyBoys

Despite having a decent working knowledge of MySQL, I've found that whatever is keeping my website from being fully functional is beyond my immediate control. Tech support will have to clean house for me whenever they get around to it.

I love Twitter, it's brought some of the most amazing people into my life. Some of you think of it as Twatter, and rightfully so, there's always the equivalent of somebody talking to themselves on the subway; Kanye West does that, it's ridiculous. I don't follow him despite how much I enjoy absurdity. Kanye can go a little dada sometimes but I can't follow the guy. It's a shame he doesn't interact more, because that's my favorite thing about Twitter. There's all this unabashed interaction and constant communication. I was taught early on that silence equals death. If you've ever been in a situation where communication is withheld by force, you learn how much words and body language matter. The value of being held as an esteemed, fellow human being is more important than you realize when things really go to shit, even if you're fairly cynical.

(Yeah, shut the fuck up. I hate hate, too. I get it.)

The point is this; it feels like we're on the crest of a vast wave, and as much as I enjoy some aspects of technology and thoroughly despise other traits, after a really long week and a busy weekend, it's so nice to be able to @reply somebody and just say hi. I have never enjoyed talking on the phone. At least with text, I can edit myself, I can contemplate how I'll possibly be perceived, and then there are times when I type so swiftly and just hit 'send' on a whim.

Sometimes people say a lot and nothing is really behind it. Other people say so much with very little. All I know is that after enduring a time where I was stripped of a lot of things most of us take for granted daily, it all added up. I had to eat some shit and do some dishes at the Karma Cafe. It's just good to know that not everybody has a poison heart, not really, it's been proven to me over and over recently.

If you're reading this, you mean something to me. I don't mean to go on a grandiose head-trip, but I hope you know that you're valued. Maybe you should remember that today if something lights your fuse and you're ready to go off like a motherfucker.

Some of you won't understand and tell me I'm being idealistic about things. I have to be, to a degree, or I don't think I'd have made it to age 27 to begin with. I wouldn't have made it through the past week. That's okay, I love you in the way you are able to accept my love, and even if we don't have the same perspective, you fill a void that I can't fill by myself.

Let's keep it up.

Love you guys.
