#NerdsUnite: The Ramblings of a Raconteuse (The Face of Hollywood's America)

<editorsnote> Nerds, meet my buddy Helenna. We met on twitter not too long ao, and she's totes mcgotes one rad chiquita banana with a flare for all things flair! That's right, Helenna here is what we call an artsy fartsy nerd. She's a poet, into all things dramatic arts, and she's going to come on board to write each week about her love of said drama. Well not like actual drama drama, like some cat fight shit - but you get the idea. I only have one thing left to say ... HIT IT HELENNA!!! </editorsnote>

One of my favorite things about awards season is The Hollywood Reporter’s interviews with the Emmy frontrunners.  They put together these fantastic roundtable discussions with some of the Drama Actress, Drama Actor, Comedy Actress, and Comedy Actor nominees.

I always get such an incredible education just from listening to them all talk about their experiences, and I really look forward to it every year.

That being said, there was something that bothered me a lot this year.  For some reason, I didn’t notice so much in the past, but the only minority face out of all twenty four nominees interviewed, was Don Cheadle’s.  In fact, only a handful of the one hundred or so nominees are visible ethnic minorities.

I’ve talked in the past about wondering where the Asians are in Hollywood, and how much of I am a fan of Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg for opening the floodgates with “Harold and Kumar,” but I would really love to see a much more inclusive representation of the “face” of America.

I think about this a lot because, as an actor who is very strong in the comedy genre, the types of lead comedic roles that I am best suited for are ones that aren’t usually played by ethnic minorities, which is the reason that I produced, directed, wrote, and starred in the web pilot The Day Player a number of years ago.  The idea was to showcase myself as a comedic actress who just happens to be”ethnically diverse.” It worked, and ultimately got the attention of the Hayden/Schlossberg team which lead to my being able to audition for “American Reunion.”

In the last decade or so opportunities in television have definitely gotten better, and ethnic minorities are increasingly shown as well rounded complex characters versus the sterotypes that have been prevalent in the past.  Last season and this fall season have made me pretty excited for the shift that has been happening and I’m hoping is going to continue.  Shows like “The Mindy Project” starring Mindy Kaling, “Elementary” starring Lucy Liu, and “Beauty and the Beast” with Kristen Kreuk are high up there on my DVR this fall.

Other older shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Hawaii 5-0,” and “Lost” (R.I.P.), have all done a great job, as has this years’ “Sullivan and Son” on TBS. In addition, there are some fantastic supporting characters that are gracing our TV sets including Hannah Simone on “New Girl” and Liza Lapria on “Don’t Trust the B” (sidebar: Liza Lapria currently has the type of career I would love to experience myself, from the types or roles she plays to the projects she is in).  However that being said, minorities are still a small percentage of the faces that we see on TV, and even less so in big budget Hollywood features.

In this fantastic piece by Carina Adly MacKenzie, she states that

“We’re also not suggesting that every show should include “token” minority casting. If a white actor is the best person for a role, then by all means, that actor should get the role. But if every role on a show is most suited to a white actor, perhaps there’s a larger issue that needs to be addressed, be it in the writing, the development, or in our conditioning as a society.”

I definitely agree with this, and obviously this is a much larger conversation, one that should surround the fact that we need more diversity among the writers/directors/and producers.  It’s a bit too much to delve into in today’s post, but overall I am definitely feeling hopeful that things will continue to progress.  In fact, I hope that in a couple of years my face is one of the ones that graces your television sets as a series regular.

Until then, I’m going to continue plugging away and doing my best to break down societal stereotypes by producing my own projects, and being cast because I’m a good actor who just happens to be a visible minority.

Until next time,

#xoxo hels

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @TheCraftafarian

This week on my way home from work my front driver’s side tire got a flat while on the interstate during rush hour.  It was weird because at first I didn’t realize then suddenly my tire was flat. Usually you can feel something is wrong before it goes totally flat. I immediately called my boyfriend to let him know and then my dad (he helps me with car troubles). We determined that I needed to call AAA since my spare tire was no good either. (Thankfully we have AAA membership courtesy of my boyfriend's dad.) Since I was stuck on the side of I-4 (which they don't consider a safe place apparently) my call was out on priority. Just a word of advice if you are ever in this situation: make sure hazards are on, remain IN the car, and keep seatbelt on! You never know, it’s possible to get hit.

As I was waiting for the tow truck I called the closest tire kingdom which ended up being closed but it forwards the call to a service center which helps direct calls and answer questions. The guy I spoke to was very helpful and patched me through to a shop that was open until 8pm. I absolutely had to get this fixed immediately as I had to be back at work at 730am. At this time it was about 7pm. It still took about 30 minutes for the tow truck to arrive.

Once the driver put safety cones out, he came up to my window and offered me an ice cold bottle of water! I was totally surprised! I have terrible luck it seems with cars so I’ve been towed many times and no one has EVER offered me a drink! It was great as my car’s AC is broken and I was really hot. He does his inspection, takes photos of the car with his tablet (to document condition of the car), and we were off in a few minutes. Thanks to that driver I avoided another potential blow out--he noticed my other front tire was in bad shape and recommended I have that one replaced also.

We finally make it to Tire Kingdom near my house (only one open in the area til 8). It was 7:55pm, the driver and I had conspired for him to get the car off his truck really quick so they "have" to take me. Being the smarty pants that I am, I had the tire kingdom employee pull my previous records and have the tires ready in advance--I was just hoping they would be willing to help me out just minutes before they were scheduled to go home.

And they were! It took 15-20 minutes for them to change my tires out. While I sat in the lobby I caught the tail end of the "republican war against women" and just shook my head...what is wrong with those guys??

Anyway, thank you SO much AAA driver--you rock!! And tire kingdom guys--you saved my ass, awesome dudes!!

Good to know there are a few nice people out there, without having to look very hard. :)

Internet is still out, poo! Hard to believe how difficult it is to find free wifi in Orlando, FL. 3G and trips to Starbucks will suffice.

#NerdsUnite: PopCapt, a Human Approach

<editorsnote> Nerds, meet my buddy Sean. He has a really rad site called Violent Gamer, and he's here today to talk about some of the latest and greatest in the gaming industry. I only have one more thing left to say ... HIT IT SEAN !!</editorsnote>

#TalkNerdyToMeLover's @violent_gamer

In the last couple of days there has been a lot of talk of PopCap, the developers behind the massively popular Plants versus Zombies and Peggle, letting go a large portion of their staff. This seemed immensely odd since they had just announced Plants vs Zombies 2 yesterday. Recently the co-founder of PopCap, John Vechey, addressed everyone in a letter that is incredibly sympathetic to all of those losing their jobs and devoid of marketing terms, it is very human. It is sadly rare for a company to be this open about everything that is going and to address the situation so thoroughly. John explains that PopCap is indeed letting many people go, mostly in their US studio, but they are still pushing forward into the gaming world and trying to deal with the new challenges put forth by the free to play and social gaming market. Here is two of my favorite paragraphs from the post,

"But this morning we informed our employees about a reorganization in our studios that will include a “Reduction In Force” in our North American operation – mostly in our headquarters here in Seattle – and an “exploratory consultation” to evaluate the future of our PopCap office in Dublin, Ireland.

And now in English: “Reduction In Force” means that some people are losing their jobs. “Exploratory consultation” means we’re talking to our Dublin team about the future of that office and whether we can find a path to improve our profitability in Europe without having to close the operation. Today’s news is something you expect periodically from a company in a fast-changing industry, but it sucks if you’re one of the people losing his or her job. These people are our friends and we don’t like doing this."

Check out the whole post here and see everything he had to say. I wish more companies would take this approach that says exactly what is going on, why it is happening, and what it means for the company. Thanks for checking it out and take a look at my previous post for the news on Planets versus Zombies 2.

#NerdsUnite: Ask That Nerdy Chick (I'm swooning, but is he really over her?)

It is my goal for 2012 to take a lot of my weird and wonky experiences as a lifecaster and help nerdy peeps out by providing a frank (not shirley) and honest answer to some weird and potentially random questions you may have about life.

Here is an email I got the other day ...

Wow! Wow! Wow! What an amazing life experience this is for you. This is a test my darling!!

Here's the pooper scooper ...

Everything that my dating experience has taught me is that life is reflective - period end of sentence. I used a FUCKING ALGORITHM to pick dates for me and of those I found the only FOOOUUUUURRRRRR that were emotionally unavailable. (103 dates in 9 monts, 11 second dates, 6 I slept with, 4 I wanted to date.)

The question isn't "can this guy be over his relationship so quickly" - it's what in you is attracted to him?

I would BET MY FREAKING LIFE on the fact that he's emotionally unavailable, (since genuinely time does heal all wounds and this guy hasn't even physically been separated from her for that long) so what in you is resonating on that level with this guy? This is an AMAZING test for you to go discover and play with.

The sparks you feel on a date, or the connection you feel with someone off the bat isn't indicative of "fate, destiny" or any other commercialization - rather only a kinship in emotions.

You need to do some self exploration, mama.

Let me ask you this ... have you allowed yourself to get close to someone since the last guy you dated? I commend you GREATLY on at least getting back out there, but as I learned first hand anyone can go out on countless dates, but not just anyone will allow themselves to get caught. Are you still harboring any anger from your previous relationship? Any shame? Guilt? Anything

Suggestion: Give this guy some space. (I did this with one of the 4 guys I was super into actually.) Set a definitive time period in which you guys won't talk to each other. Since he's SO new, I kid you not when I say he should have at least until January. Give him some time to shake things off, and you some time to go explore your own self emotionally. If you guys are meant to be together you can be in the new year. It's symbolic actually, a new year and potentially a new relationship!!! But either way, you. have. to. stay. strong. No texts, no calls, no Facebook stalking, nothing. Complete radio silence on both of your parts until the new year and theeeennnnnnnnnn post the next day hangover you guys can go explore.

Hope it works out babydoll, and please please please keep me posted!!

Got a question? Drop me an email! JenFriel at TalkNerdyToMeLover dot com

ORRRRR you can message me on Facebook and if it's within 140 characters on the twitter!

Best of luck out there nerds!!
