Never buy carnations for your lady. While the gesture of buying flowers should be enough, and certainly is commendable, the only thing worse than buying a boquet of carnations for someone is buying a boquet of baby's breath. Carnations make women feel cheap, and second best. Remember in middle school when you could buy a carnation for your valentine for $.50? So do we.
So unless your ladyfriend tells you specifically, and more than once, that she loves carnations, go for something else. Daisies, lillies and tulips are beautiful and don't carry the stigma of roses.

lets be honest: its fucking hard for a guy to guess which flower a girl could like.

i think roses are ok: it means, i adore you, but i have no idea, who you are.
i love this!! and i agree carnations are so gross. Honestly, i had a guy give me a little plastic flower craft that he made once before our first date, and i loved it. still kept it.
i know its the thought that counts, but i think carnations say I'm somewhere out to lunch.

i dont usually buy flaoers but back in my drinking days i lived with this one girl for a while and i would steal roses while walking home from the bar and put them in her purse so that she found them in the morning. that worked pretty well.
Carnations are 'funeral flowers' in Slovenia. Traditionally, we take them to the graves on Nov 1st (for a funeral they're almost a must). So yeah, none for me, thanks.

I'm an old married bitty, so I wasn't as much thinking for dates. I rarely thought flowers before a date were a smart choice. I don't think any gift before a date is smart, it tends to make women feel obligated to enjoy themselves. I was thinking more along the lines of "I was thinking about you" gift, and in that case, carnations generally mean "I was thinking about you, just not enough to do something nice." Or "I was thinking about you, but I can't afford real flowers and was too lazy to be creative."
And it totally is hard to guess which flower a girl will like. That's why I gave some examples of safe choices. And some women love carnations. Some people like the smell of skunks, but it definitely doesn't mean its rational!
