As some of you nerds may know we are sometimes picked on or singled out because we are different. The simplest conclusion I came to was that there was something wrong with me. I had never experienced this more than when I moved to a new high school my junior year. My differences stuck out like a peppered moth in one of H.B.D. Kettlewell’s experiments. If you haven’t heard of him, he conducted experiments in the 1950’s to determine whether the drastic population decline of certain colored peppered moths were a result of adaptations to the changing environment. While catching up on Facebook Chat with former classmate and TNTML founder Jen Friel, I mentioned that I was falling short of the successes I desire. I began to point the finger at my past when she mentioned that SHE played the victim mentality for 24 years and finally made a decision to change it. Jen set out on a quest for awesomeness and in ten months slayed her evil dragon and told me I could too. At this point in the conversation my mind was scrambling for the words to describe just how awful my experience was and how she couldn’t possibly understand.
As if she read my mind she said “Dude we’ve all been through shit… so what, it was the past. It doesn’t matter what it was, you still have a problem if it affects you. I made a conscious effort to stop and it changed my life. I realized I had to get over myself.”
I fell back in my chair with a stunned look on my face. How could I have missed something so blindingly obvious? Like a light colored peppered moth on a dark tree the victim mentality is making me an easy target.
Because Talk Nerdy To Me Lover is a place where I can blend in, my goal is to make Jen a custom t-shirt. The shirt will be black with a white colored peppered moth on the front. On the back will be a dark one blending into it’s surroundings. On the front it will say Before Talk Nerdy To Me Lover and on the back it will simply say After.
